Chapter 10: Activating, Changing Your Speed, And Pausing

As stated in the previous instructions above, to activate the text to speech, you need to place two fingers at the top of the screen and swipe down. It doesn’t always work at first because you need just the right finesse when swiping, but you will get the hang of it. When the voice starts to read, you might find you want to make some adjustments to the speed.

I created some videos to walk you through the process of setting up your device for The BuzzRead Method. It’s all free and available right here: http://debbiedrum.com/buzzreadvids.

The best part about The BuzzRead Method is how quickly you will see an improvement in your ability to follow along and listen faster, which will get you through the material faster.

With text to speech, you can adjust the speed to go very slowly or extremely fast. You will find there is a speed where the words become incomprehensible. You need to find a speed you're comfortable with, which will be different for everyone.

I can normally keep up with a speed that’s faster than double-time, but for certain business books that have key concepts to understand, I like to listen a bit slower. I tend to visualize what’s going on in fiction books at a much faster speed. I can also listen to non-fiction material that I’m already familiar with where I’m not learning it for the first time at a setting that’s a little faster than double speed. The voice goes very fast, but as long as you keep following along and keep listening, comprehension is not a problem.

On the Apple devices, the speed is represented as a turtle and a bunny. You press the bunny if you want to speed up, and you press the turtle if you want to slow down (see picture below). Makes sense, right? Unfortunately, there is no percentage meter or slider that allows you to track how fast you are going, so you’ll just have to guestimate, and keep changing the setting until you find a speed you’re comfortable with.
